Do (better) research.

Online searches for an area’s top restaurants can pull up tourist traps that paid for a spot on those lists. Instead, look for a local food blog or in the city newspaper’s food section and skim a few stories to get a sense of what’s tried-and-true or new and exciting.

Use your hands—and your phone.

It used to be that pointing at the next table’s meal and smiling was the simplest way to order in a foreign language. Today, apps like Google Translate and Waygo can translate a menu into English in a matter of moments, so you know what you’re getting.

Take a food tour.

One of the quickest ways to get the lay of a culinary scene is to spend a few hours with a guide. You’ll have unfettered access to a foodie authority and, if you schedule a tour at the beginning of your trip, recommendations for the next few days.

Forgo the view and skip the specialty.

Panoramic vistas and out-of-season specialties draw crowds but don’t guarantee flavor. Don’t be afraid to pass on stunning picture windows or halibut in December in favor of a good meal. You can always take in the view with an after-dinner stroll.

Eat at the market.

Travelers don’t always have the time or know-how to cook with the fresh ingredients from markets around the world. Thankfully, market restaurants tend to be nearly foolproof.
