Canary Islands Wellness Escapes

These serene spas are worth the trip.

By Terry Ward

Spain’s stunning volcanic islands off the coast of North Africa have long lured travelers with their intoxicating—and healing—equation of sun plus fresh air and the sea. Here, three of the archipelago’s finest retreats.

Thalasso Gloria San Agustín

Gran Canaria

Fronting the beach on southern Gran Canaria island, this spa specializes in thalassotherapy—a Greek treatment meaning “sea therapy” that harnesses the healing powers of salt water and algae. This center is the first of its kind in the Canaries and is the largest in Europe, with more than 75,000 square feet devoted to heated seawater pools, hydromassage stations and treatments that incorporate marine collagens and natural mud.

Spa Bahía del Duque

Tenerife

Indigenous materials such as lava stones and island grasses dominate the décor at this soothing spot on the south coast of Tenerife, the largest of the Canaries. You can treat your skin to body wraps and facials that tie in healing native ingredients, including banana leaves and aloe, and then soak in one of the spa’s thalassotherapy pools.

Hotel Balneario Pozo de la Salud

El Hierro

The chance to soak in curative mineral waters from the Pozo de la Salud (a spring-fed “well of health” that dates to the 18th century) is one of the draws of El Hierro, the smallest and westernmost island in the archipelago. Adjacent to the famed well, this spa has an outdoor water circuit overlooking the ocean and treatments that integrate volcanic stones.
