Matterhorn Glacier Ride

Zermatt, Switzerland

Opened in November, Switzerland’s new Matterhorn glacier ride climbs to Europe’s highest cable-car station at 12,740 feet on Klein Matterhorn. The new route cruises between Trockener Steg and Matterhorn glacier paradise—complete with restaurants, year-round skiing, an observation platform, and more—in just nine minutes following a 30-minute cable-car ride from the town of Zermatt. All 25 cabins provide panoramic views of some of the tallest peaks in the Alps, and for those wanting an upgrade, four Swarovski-crystal-adorned, glass-bottomed luxury cabins are also available. 011-41-27-966-01-01;; return tickets between Zermatt and Matterhorn glacier paradise, from $87* a person; upgrade to the Crystal ride for an additional $10

Grande Motte Cable Car

Tignes, France

France’s Grand Motte cable car is modernizing with a new dual-rope aerial tramway and the world’s first high-elevation cabins with rooftop terraces. The ride shuttles up to 1,000 people an hour from 9,954 feet to nearly 11,339 feet on Grande Motte Glacier. The route passes over the French Alps and over Vanoise National Park, home to France’s largest population of ibex as well as marmots and golden eagles, so prime viewing is key. During the spring and summer, passengers who want to take the experience to the next level can ride on the open-air decks. 011-33-04-79-40-03-03;; tickets, $13 a person

Sarajevo Cable Car

Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

As of April 2018, cable cars again connect Sarajevo’s old town to Trebević Mountain. The original Sarajevo Cable Car was destroyed during the city’s 1990s siege, but the new system follows the same path, soaring above the tiled roofs and dizzyingly steep streets. In a symbolic reclamation of the future, one of the gondolas is colored gold, blue, and white for Bosnia & Herzegovina’s flag. 011-387-33-292-800;; one-way tickets, $9
